Frequently Asked Questions
The New Era: Transition & Vision
Why the change from "Five Flags" to "The Woods"?
While we thank the previous owners for watching over this land and providing the opportunity to purchase it, we wanted a name that reflected the natural beauty of the property. “The Woods” represents a fresh start and our commitment to letting the 33 acres of mature timber and Northwoods scenery take center stage.
Who is behind the new ownership group?
We are a team with deep roots in Wisconsin golf: Bruce Halvorson (18 years experience at Glen Hills and Sioux Creek), Quinn Johnson (the creative force behind Lazy Moose), and Bryan “Tat” Tahtinen (our restoration expert with 15+ years of turf management).
I’ve heard the course is in "distressed" condition. What does that mean for my round?
It means we are being honest about our starting point. The “bones” of the course are fantastic, but the turf requires significant rehabilitation. You may see some thin areas or crews working on irrigation. As “Tat” says, “The land will tell us what to do.” We are focusing on long-term soil health, and the course will get better every single week.
Tee Times & Booking
Do I need a tee time, or can I just walk on?
While we do our best to accommodate walk-ins, we highly recommend booking in advance—especially on weekends and during our growing league nights. You can [Book Online Here] or call the Pro Shop at [Insert Balsam Lake Phone Number].
What is your cancellation policy?
We ask for at least 24 hours’ notice for cancellations or changes to your group size so we can open the spot for other golfers.
How long does it take to play 9 holes?
A typical round at The Woods moves right along at about 1 hour and 45 minutes. During peak weekend times, the pace usually settles in at around 2 hours and 15 minutes.
Carts & Rentals
Am I able to use a personal cart on the course?
Generally, no. To protect our recovering turf from unknown tire treads and weights, we do not allow outside carry-on carts. This is especially important during our restoration phase. The only exception applies to our onsite cart shed tenants. For all other guests, we provide a modern fleet of specialized, turf-friendly power carts.
Do you offer pull carts for walkers?
Yes! For those who enjoy the walk through the timber, we have pull carts available for rent.
Do you have rental clubs?
We sure do. We have a variety of Adult and Junior sets (both left and right-handed) available in the Pro Shop. Please let us know when booking if you’ll need a set.
Leagues & Membership
What leagues do you offer?
We are building a vibrant league culture similar to the “Sioux Creek Vibe.” We are currently organizing AARP Leagues, 2-Person Leagues, Women’s Leagues, and 4-Man Leagues. Check our [Leagues Page] for the 2026 schedule!
Do you offer memberships?
Yes! We offer several season pass options. Becoming a member is the best way to support the restoration and become a “Founding Partner” in this comeback story.
Clubhouse & Grill
Is there food and drink available?
Absolutely. While our Clubhouse Remodel is underway, we will still offer freshly made pizzas, small bites, and a snack bar. Our bar is fully stocked, and we’re already working on making our Bloody Marys a local Balsam Lake legend!
Can I bring my own cooler or alcohol
No outside carry-ins are permitted. Wisconsin state law requires all alcohol consumed on the premises to be purchased from our Clubhouse.
Course Rules & Facilities
What is the dress code?
We keep it casual! Denim and jeans are perfectly fine. We just ask for appropriate athletic attire and that you wear soft spikes or athletic shoes only (no heavy work boots, please, as they are tough on the greens).
Do you allow "fivesomes"?
Generally, we limit groups to four players. During non-peak times, fivesomes may be permitted with prior Clubhouse approval. These groups are required to play a scramble format to maintain the pace of play.
Do you have a practice range?
Yes! We offer a practice range and a practice green to help you sharpen your game before you head out into The Woods.
